Vienna

Theatre

The prime location in Vienna for theatre enthusiasts is the Burgtheater, which of course requires a certain standard of German to follow what’s going on. A smaller version of the same stage is the nearby Volkstheater. For performances in English, Vienna has its own English Theater in der Josefstadt (plays are cast and rehearsed in London). Satirical cabaret shows are staged all over town; a good place to go for this is Ronacher.

Classical Music

Classical music is still the sound that pervades Viennese culture. The programme of musical events seems never-ending and this is the city in which to hear classical pieces. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra normally performs at the Musikverein, which is said to have the best acoustics of any concert hall in Austria (if not in the world). Just a stone's throw away is another famous concert hall, the Konzerthaus, which has the capacity to stage three performances simultaneously. Most programmes are classical, but you can also hear anything from ethnic music to jazz. The Schönbrunn Palace offers outdoor classical concerts in summer.

Opera

Visitors to Vienna should not miss a night at the world famous Staatsoper (State Opera). It certainly ranks among the world’s top five opera houses. Another main venue for opera is the smaller Volksoper (People's Opera), whose repertoire includes operettas and musicals.

Live Music

Live music is played all over Vienna. Some recommended places to hear rock are the Chelsea and the Rhiz (within walking distance of each other), featuring international as well as local bands. Jazzland is one of Vienna’s few real jazz clubs—sometimes big international names even drop by. Plenty of good jazz musicians also perform at Radiokulturhaus. Big concerts featuring commercial pop groups are often staged at the Stadthalle, an indoor venue.

Bars

Buddha Bar-Restaurant has a cool, low lit ambience and is a great establishment for quality food and drink. The atmosphere is always lively & the clientele is a pleasant mix of many ages, locals and weekend break foreigners. The Djs play a good selection of music and the bartenders make a mean cocktail. If you’re looking for somewhere upbeat for the evening, then grab a table at Buddha, enjoy there excellent food or wide range of beverages and start your Vienna break with a big smile.

Rhiz Bar is a platform for new projects and experiments in electronic music, film and video presentations. The daily Dj programs and live performances of Austrian and international musicians, definitely makes Rhiz an important part of the Viennese electronica scene. The drink prices are reasonable, the staff are down to earth and the clientele are a mix of music loving foreigners & locals. Rhiz is a great alternative to the many hectic bars and a place to escape the main stream party people & stag weekend parties. One of the most stylish venues to find is the futuristic B72’s. Although on the outskirts of the city, B72 is worth a look. The bar area is filled with chic furnishings and the club room is always pumping to the DJs music box. The crowd is a sleek mix of trendy socialites, who appreciate the wide mix of music, ranging from dancehall, RnB and house.

For cocktail and vodka drinkers, try Absolut Bar. The venue is a living Absolut advertisement but nevertheless, it’s not a bad place to come for a drink. They have a massive selection of vodkas from all over Europe, in many styles and flavours.

Cactus Bar, found in the vibrant Bermuda triangle, never shows signs of slowing down on the weekends. Parties can go on well past 4am and the atmosphere is electric. People are always pouring into this bar as one of their many stops during a big night out. The crowd tends to be quite young, mainly students or stag do’s on a big weekend session, but it’s still a top place to try.
